June 15 Day 20 Reston to Glenboro 137k (2460k)
A challenging day! Had to go 50k to get breakfast at Souris, the first place with an open restaurant. It is a beautiful town with many large trees, attractive buildings and a beautiful river valley. We took lots of photos which we will post later. Once again the roads were quite variable with depressed bumps every 100 feet or so, then we encountered construction and rode 3k on gravel (with little problem). Then the bumpy road conditions resumed, but another problem soon had our complete attention. A crosswind with a strong headwind component blew steadily at about 40 kph from the southeast all afternoon. We had to fight to make headway and to keep control of the bikes which tend to act like a sail with the panniers on the sides. We were really tired in the upper body when the day ended and were glad to get off the bikes when we did. Also, there were no other places to stop until Glenboro; we had no lunch except for energy bars and were out of water when we arrived. We were told there was a campground but did not find one so we took a motel room. A tough day, but the hotel and shower was very welcome.
