Day 8 June 3 Castlegar to Creston 154 k
Enjoyed the early morning ride to Nelson via Pass Creek road. Can understand why it is listed as a road for cyclists to visit in BC. Natural beauty at very corner. Deer, lots of bird life. Nelson is a gem, an interesting and eye-catching place that is thriving. Made a bit of a speed trip to Balfour to catch the 11:30 ferry across Kootney Lake to Kootney Bay. Chatted with various people on the ferry, Ospery. Serious 1k hill off the ferry, but the new road along the eastern side of the Lake was a welcome suprise. A great rolling hills ride for many kilometers. Gorgeous scenery with the lake and mountian backdrop. Had lunch in Boswell at Italin restaurant - real Italian sphagettei and meatballs cooked up and served by the 80 year old Italian proprietress. Delicious! Chance stop at Sirdar for snack resulted in conversation at the general store with the local post mistress, who told us about the big hill on Hwy 3A between Wyndell and Creston. She also told us about the low flat bypass which we took, the Lower Wyndell Road, which starts at Wyndell and runss along the edge of farm land all the way to Creston where it joined Hgy 3 again. A peaceful quiet way to end a long ride. Camped at "Pair a Dice" campground where we were suprised to have Micheal join us again. The campground was clean and quiet, and hot showers were free.
