May 27 Day 1 on the road

Tug, Brydone and I went to Kitsilano Beach to start our ride from the Pacific Ocean, then Brydone guided us across the City along Vacouver's many bike paths to 0 (zero) Avenue which runs for many kilometers along the Canada-US border. The only evidence of the border was a small drainage ditch about one meter from the edge of the road, plus some widely spaced stone markers and cameras every few Km. It was strange to see the counterpart, Washington State road a few steps away in the US. The Zero Avenue ride was flat, quiet, had few cars, and great scenery. Great weather. Cool, but sunny. Gary Baker of Chilliwack rode out to meet us and guided us back to their place at Cultus Lake where we stayed. Gary and Sheryl Henderson are really into biking; Gary is an accomplished Randonneur - a form of extreme long distance riding. Lots of great conversation about bikes, equipment, routes, and randonneurs. Jet lag caught up to us late in the afternoon, but we finished without undue fatigue. Did 130 Km - a solid start.
